Supporting the Professional development of the Share Kai Cooks Collective

The Share Kai Cooks Collective provides opportunities for women from refugee backgrounds who face barriers to participating in the workforce and wider Aotearoa/New Zealand society.

InCommon works alongside the Cooks Collective to provide professional development and opportunities for the Cooks Collective to increase their social connections and financial security. This year, two of our Cooks Collective members - Jamila and Tulasha - are training to become Share Kai Cafe Coordinators, they'll support other members of the Cooks Collective to operate the café at Canterbury WEA, 59 Gloucester Street, lunch time on the first Friday of every month.

The café is an incubator for members, providing the opportunity to build hospitality skills by taking turns operating the café each week and keeping all proceeds made. New menu released to order online from the last Friday of each month!  Join us for our next Share Kai Café on Friday April 4, 12 - 1.30pm for an Eritrean lunch!

In February Jamila and Tulasha attended the Lady Khadija Trust Ethnic Women’s Leadership Conference, where they had the privilege of learning from an incredible group of leaders, changemakers, and visionaries. Ngā mihi/thank you to Dr Hafsa and her team for supporting this opportunity.

In March five members of the Cooks Collective completed their cooking tutor training with Risingholme Learning thanks to mentoring by Karen. These members will be delivering cooking classes at Risingholme Learning later this year. Stay tuned if you’d like to learn how to cook their delicious traditional dishes.

Dr Zainab and Khadra from ARMSS are working alongside the Share Kai Operations team to run small business workshops for Cooks Collective members interested in starting their own hospitality business one day.

The Share Kai Cooks Collective reached an impressive milestone this month - member Jamila opened her own stall - called ZJ Kitchen - at the Riccarton Market Sundays 9 - 2pm at the Riccarton Racecourse. With a bit of support from InCommon and the lovely Riccarton Market crew, led by Callum, she opened for the first time in early March. If you love Afghan and Pakistani food - think bolani (stuffed flatbreads), mantu (dumplings), chicken biryani, baklava (sweet pastries) - come down and support her!
