15 March Coronial Inquiry - A Shared Meal for the Community

The coronial inquiry into the 15 March 2019 Ōtautahi Christchurch Masjidain attack began on 24 October 2023 and continued for more than 8 weeks.

During this time approximately 600 members of whānau directly affected by the attacks visited Ōtautahi Christchurch to attend the court proceedings and to support family members.

This was a difficult and grief filled time for members of our Muslim and wider communities in Ōtautahi.

In 2019 the outpouring of compassion and unity shown following the events on 15 March was something that gave many people strength. Again this is a time to come together and support each other, the following are some ways we can show our aroha during this difficult time.

Ways to show support:

  • Show manaakitanga by making a donation towards the free meals made by the Afghan Share Kai Cooks Collective for members of the Muslim community. These meals are hosted weekly at the Multicultural Centre for those gathering after Court proceedings. Thank you for your donation.

  • Help create a visual reminder of our compassion for families by sharing a message of aroha on the bunting provided at libraries around Ōtautahi. Bunting will be collected and displayed for community members, after which they will be turned into Giving Seeds of Love cards.
